Moving home is one of those jobs that is easy to plan badly. A van that is too small means two or three extra trips, while one that is too big means unnecessary cost and stress when parking outside a block of flats. In this guide we explain what L3H2 and L4H2 mean, how many cubic metres you need for a studio flat compared with a three-room flat, how much it costs to hire a van and how to prepare so that your move goes smoothly.
A removal company provides a crew to do the lifting, but it costs considerably more and you have to fit in with its schedule. Hiring a van is a good solution if:
Yes, as long as the van’s maximum permissible weight (GVW) does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. Van manufacturers describe the size of the load space using two parameters:
So an L3H2 van is the long version with a raised roof, and an L4H2 is the longest version with a raised roof. The H2 roof lets you stand up comfortably in the load space and transport wardrobes, fridges or shelving units upright.
| Model | Capacity | Load space dimensions (L × W × H) | Gearbox | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peugeot Partner | 3.3 m³ | compact panel van | automatic | single items of furniture, household appliances, boxes, moving out of a student room |
| Citroën Jumper L3H2 | 13 m³ | 3.70 × 1.87 × 1.93 m | manual | studio flat, 2-room flat |
| Citroën Jumper L4H2 | 15 m³ | 4.07 × 1.87 × 1.93 m | manual | 2–3-room flat, large furniture |
| Citroën Jumper L4H2 Automatic | 15 m³ | 4.07 × 1.87 × 1.93 m | automatic | as above, easier manoeuvring in the city |
The 3.7 m length of the L3H2 van is enough to carry a three-seater sofa or a 160 × 200 cm bed lying flat. Choose the L4H2 van, with a load length of over 4 m, if you are moving a corner sofa or long built-in wardrobe panels, or want to fit an entire flat into a single trip.
The simplest way to estimate the size of van you need is by the number of rooms. The figures below apply to a typically furnished flat:
| Home | Estimated volume of belongings | Recommended van |
|---|---|---|
| Student hall room or rented room | 2–4 m³ | Peugeot Partner – 1 trip |
| Studio flat (1 room) | 8–12 m³ | Jumper L3H2 – 1 trip |
| 2-room flat | 12–18 m³ | Jumper L4H2 – 1 trip or L3H2 – 2 trips |
| 3-room flat | 20–30 m³ | Jumper L4H2 – 2 trips |
| House | 35 m³ or more | Jumper L4H2 – several trips or a rental over several days |
If you have lots of books, sports equipment or things stored in a cellar, choose a bigger van or plan an extra trip. It is always better to have a bit of spare space than to leave half your belongings for the next day.
When moving a flat, you are more likely to run out of space than payload. Be careful, however, when transporting building materials, tiles, floor panels or bags of rubble, as it is easy to exceed the maximum permissible weight. Payload is the difference between the GVW and the vehicle’s kerb weight. You will find both values in the vehicle registration certificate (fields F.1 and G).
