Can you drive in the left lane all the time?

Many drivers wonder whether it is possible to drive in the left lane throughout the entire route, especially on a motorway or expressway. This question becomes especially important when we notice that some drivers block traffic by driving in the left lane despite the free right lane. Is it legal? Let's check.

What do the regulations say about driving in the left lane?

According to the Polish Road Code, on roads with two or more lanes in one direction, the rule is to drive as close as possible to the right edge of the roadway (Article 16, section 4 of the Road Traffic Act). The left lane is primarily used for:

  • overtaking other vehicles,
  • avoiding obstacles,
  • in some cases — to prepare for a left turn.

However, you are not allowed to drive in the left lane all the time if the right lane is empty. This obstructs traffic and can lead to penalties or danger.

When is driving in the left lane allowed for extended periods of time?

Exceptions to the rule

Despite the general ban on continuous driving in the left lane, there are situations in which longer use of the left lane may be justified:

  • Heavy traffic in the right lane — e.g. in cities, where the lanes are occupied by buses, parked cars, turning vehicles.
  • Overtaking a column of vehicles – you may remain in the left lane until the overtaking is completed.
  • Approaching an exit or intersection – e.g. a left turn.
  • Traffic jams or roadworks – sometimes it is necessary to move to the left lane for a longer period of time.

Can you get a ticket for driving in the left lane?

Yes. The police can issue a fine of up to PLN 200 and 2 penalty points for blocking the left lane without justification. Such behaviour is also sometimes treated as obstructing traffic – especially when the driver does not give way to faster vehicles. However, if the police assess that the behaviour obstructed traffic (e.g. drivers blocking many drivers, causing a traffic jam), they can apply a higher tariff – minimum PLN 500 (without specific points).

The situation on the highways

On expressways, drivers are often unaware that:

On the motorway, driving in the left lane should be limited to overtaking manoeuvres only.

Even if we are driving within the speed limit, we should move to the right lane after overtaking.

Why shouldn't you drive in the left lane all the time?

Obstructing traffic

By occupying the left lane unnecessarily, you slow down faster drivers. This can lead to:

  • frustration,
  • aggressive maneuvers,
  • dangerous overtaking in the right lane (which may be an offense in itself, but is very dangerous).

Risk of collision

By forcing others to pass you on the right, you are putting yourself and other road users at greater risk of an accident.

How to use lanes correctly?

  • Always drive in the rightmost slow lane.
  • Leave the left lane for overtaking, then return to the right.
  • Watch your mirrors and yield to faster vehicles.
  • Avoid driving “out of spite” – being polite on the road is also safe.
